The Game of Life requires that we read, read, read. Research shows that background knowledge and vocabulary are directly related to how much we read. Children who struggle to read need to be immersed in language. Reading to your child and having them listen to stories begins to build language skills.
Mathematics
Math skills are critical to everyday living. We use math in ways that most of us often don't realize. It's not just something we need in math class at school. It's in our homes, in our cars and many other areas of daily activities.
Writing
The Barkhamsted School has adopted a new program called "Writer's Workshop". Often, one of the most difficult tasks for students is to get started. They need to be taught that writing is talking on paper. However, the challenge is often to get their speaking and thoughts onto paper. For many students, technology has opened up a whole new world. Speech-to-text eliminates the anxiety of transferring their thoughts to the written word.
